The Ignite format allows a speaker five minutes with twenty PowerPoint slides to present a particular topic to a lay audience in an engaging manner. The IgniteTalks platform was developed by O’Reilly Media in 2006 to build community and individual confidence through public speaking. Similar to a TED talk, where the idea is to spread an idea through a powerful talk, Ignite offers speakers an opportunity to challenge themselves to give a fast and fun presentation. For students, this is beneficial because it forces them to be clear and concise and work within a particular set of constraints while still getting their message across.

The use of Ignite in engineering education is an innovative way for future engineers to master oral communication skills. The pre-set rotation of a new slide every 15 seconds makes it difficult to stick with a memorized script, requiring speakers to be comfortable with their topic and to recover from their mistakes. This presentation format is challenging for students and prepares them for the rigors of business presentations in the engineering industry.
